About

A classic single-screen drive-in on the edge of Newberg — the closest true drive-in to Portland, about 25 miles southwest of the city. Each night the 99W plays a double feature, pairing a current release with a second film, with the soundtrack broadcast to your car stereo over FM radio. Back into a spot, tune in, and watch a movie under the open sky the way audiences have here since 1953. Admission is cash at the gate, and the drive-in runs seasonally from spring into early fall.

The 99W Drive-In opened in 1953 on Highway 99W in Newberg, southwest of Portland, and has been family-owned ever since. It is one of only a handful of drive-in theaters still operating in Oregon, having survived the wave of closures that erased most of America's drive-ins through the 1980s and '90s. When Hollywood stopped shipping 35mm prints, the theater raised the money to install digital projection and kept the big screen lit — a working piece of mid-century Americana a half-hour from downtown Portland.
