5th Avenue Cinema

Downtown (PSU campus)· Opened 1970· digital

5th Avenue Cinema is an independent movie theater in Downtown (PSU campus), Portland, open since 1970.

About

Oregon's only student-run cinema, tucked into the basement of PSU's Ondine residence hall and programmed each term by the student Film Committee. It leans into art-house, foreign, cult, and repertory titles, with free popcorn at every show — free admission for PSU students and a small charge for the general public.

5th Avenue Cinema opened in October 1970 as the Cine-Mini Theater, an intimate, fully automated movie house that Moyer Theaters built in former Portland State University bookstore space. It went dark in the 1980s, then in 1989 a group of PSU students revived it under the PSU Film Committee — and it has been student-run ever since.
